The usual mix of womany-things that bring joy to my week! Ascent of Woman, Juliette Lewis Rocks, Body Art, Recycled Fashion, Anjelica Huston, Gloria Steinem, and mooooore… 😀
D O C U S E R I E S: The Ascent of Woman
My 2 1/2 year old daughter, Elena, and I have been watching this new Netflix series together, and I’m not sure if I love the series itself more or the fact that my little girl is totally into with me. (I love both, most certainly!) The docuseries recounts 10 thousand years of history around women, with surprising and little-known information about the women who have shaped civilization through the ages. It’s a brilliant show hosted by a pretty incredible woman, professional historian Amanda Foreman (who is also a mother to 5 children… heck yes.)
D O C U S E R I E S: WOMAN with Gloria Steinem
Awesome new series that just launched on Viceland, hosted by powerhouse feminist Gloria Steinem. I’ve only seen the trailer thus far (since I’m still working my way through The Ascent of Woman), but it gave me absolute chills and I can’t wait to start watching the episodes! It’s available to watch for free on the Viceland website.
P R E G N A N C Y P R O F I L E: Daria Einhorn of DISA NYC
A brief interview with former model and current mother/designer Daria Einhorn, who founded her own beautiful children’s fashion line a couple years ago and manages to balance being a mom to two, being pregnant with #3, and working all at once. These kind of women never cease to inspire me.
Progress in China for same-sex couples who wish to procreate, bravo to these two women!
“The lesbian couple is one of the first in China known to have used this form of assisted reproduction. The birth is seen as a sort of milestone in China, which has become a more tolerant place for gay couples over the past nearly four decades.“
M O V E M E N T: The Compassion Collective
The Compassion Collective is a group that came together to help homeless American youth and unaccompanied refugee children. Founded by powerhouse individuals Elizabeth Gilbert, Rob Bell, Brene Brown, Cheryl Strayed, and Glennon Doyle Melton, the group aims to clothe, shelter, and give hope to young people who lack these basic human essential needs.
“The Compassion Collective was born as a response the Syrian refugee crisis, the worst humanitarian emergency the world has seen since World War II. We knew our action in the face of this crisis would define us. We want to be remembered as the generation that chose Love over Fear.”
E C O – F A S H I O N: Emma Watson’s Recycled Evening Gown
Jamie Bullock posted about this on our FB page last week, and I think it’s totally worth sharing here again! I get all gushy when it comes to fashion, but especially when it’s innovative/sustainable fashion. This dress is absolutely killer to look at, and made from recycled materials. Please let this trend continue and grow!
(From Emma’s FB page:) “Thank you Calvin Klein & Eco Age for collaborating with me and creating the most amazing gown. I am proud to say it is truly sustainable and represents a connection between myself and all the people in the supply chain who played a role in creating it.
The body of the gown is crafted from three different fabrics, all woven from yarns made from recycled plastic bottles (!). Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet. Being able to repurpose this waste and incorporate it into my gown for the #MetGala proves the power that creativity, technology and fashion can have by working together.
Each and every part of this beautiful gown has been produced with sustainability in mind, even the components that you can’t see. The zippers on the gown are made from recycled materials and the inner bustier has been crafted from organic cotton. Conventional cotton is one of the highest impact crops, using more chemicals than any other crop in the world. Organic cotton on the other hand, is grown without the use of the most harmful chemicals and is therefore better for the environment and people working with cotton. The organic silk used in the lining of my gown is certified to a standard that guarantees the highest environmental and social standards throughout production. It is my intention to repurpose elements of the gown for future use. The trousers can be worn on their own, as can the bustier, the train can be used for a future red carpet look… I’m looking forward to experimenting with this. Truly beautiful things should be worn again and again and again. #30wears“

A R T: Alexa Meade
Alexa Meade takes the 3-D world and paints it into 2-D submission, resulting in amazing trickery of the eye. Watch the video in link above to see her remarkable process. (That’s a real girl painted to look like a work on canvas!)

S T Y L E F I L E: Anjelica Huston’s Style
I’ve long been enamored by Anjelica Huston as an actress and person, in fact I think she’s my favorite actress ever. She also has enduring, enigmatic style. This slideshow is just a fun look at her fashion sense through the years.
R O C K – N – R O L L: Juliette Lewis mini rock doc
Aghhhhhhhhhh! I am always impressed at the stuff Kristin Tona emails me for our Menageries! This 1/2 hour documentary about actress/rock star musician Juliette Lewis is SO WORTH watching!! She is a true blue badass onstage, gave me chills to watch her. And she’s just such a damn funny, fascinating, intriguing woman. The kind I would like to meet and sit and listen to her talk for an hour or four. I totally dig her vibes.
