Enjoy some Jon and Malala love, inspirational art, an awesome online mag, education about how Obama is cleaning up the place, a story of 3 women who had the balls to scam ISIS and a video like you have never seen before in our MONDAY MENAGERIE!
The mighty Jon Stewart taped and aired his final show on Thursday night (and it was so, so GOOD) so I had to pay tribute to him by including this article and extended version of his interview with Malala. I am currently listening to her audio book “I Am Malala” and am so moved and inspired by this girl I almost can’t handle it. I also LOVE how captivated and taken Jon is with her, it says so much about him.
“Jon Stewart’s interview with Malala Yousafzai is arguably one of the most popular in the show’s history, and certainly one of the most viral. It set the world on fire the morning after it aired.”
In the wake of yet another (attempted) shooting (UGH) in Tennessee last week, I thought I would share this beautiful article that was posted shortly after the Charleston tragedy. Local artists came together and created incredible pieces to express their emotions and to show love and respect to their community and the lives that were lost.
“People use creativity to make sense of all of this. They use the arts to express these deep emotions of sorrow and pain and loss,” Zommer said. The arts can do that. They can help us heal.”
There is something very wrong in our country, and throughout the world, there is no denying it. Senseless killing, oppression, usurpation of power and little regard for freedom and human rights. Things have to change and articles like this are examples of how they just might when we bring love, art and creativity to the forefront.
Speaking of art, I just met this cool girl with an incredible eye who we are going to be seeing a lot more of. Alaina Latona has a bad-ass website with some stunning images and original, captivating videos. She created this online magazine, PERJUS, so that she could harness and share all of the amazing talent she is finding across the web. She is working on a printed version of it and well known photographers are jumping on her band wagon. Stay tuned for Issue # 2!

Speaking of using your art for good, how amazing are Ruchira Gupta and Rosena Sammi? These women are upcycling traditional Sari’s into beautiful handmade jewelry and the proceeds are going to help, save, educate and empower girls in the most poverty stricken areas in India.
“The funds will directly pay for 3 to 5 days a week of school, providing for tuition, supplies and food. Our goal is to eventually build a school.”
The jewelry line is colorful and beautiful. Saving young girls from a life of sex trafficking and prostitution is something I want to spend my money on.
One of the Project Women themes of the month is travel experiences that changed your life so I thought this article was appropriate. We all need to find simple ways to make the way we live more sustainable and less impactful and it just makes sense to learn some tips while traveling the world. Ah, wouldn’t that be the life??
Speaking of sustainability, on August 3rd Obama announced the Clean Power Plan. Which is described as…
“our biggest step yet in the fight against climate change. The plan is a landmark action to protect public health, reduce energy bills for households and businesses, create American jobs, and bring clean power to communities across the country”
I am grateful for a leader who is speaking out, making changes and identifying this as a real problem and taking action against it.
“We only get one home we only get one planet—there’s no Plan B. I don’t want my grandkids not to be able to swim in Hawaii or not to be able to climb a mountain and see a glacier because we didn’t do something about [climate change]. I don’t want millions of people’s lives disrupted and this world more dangerous because we didn’t do something about it. That’d be shameful of us. This is our moment to get this right. Do something better for our kids. Let’s make the most of that opportunity.”
Since I won’t be able to get my news from Jon Stewart anymore, John Oliver is quickly taking his place with his humor and impassioned way of getting the information to his viewers. Last week he told this story and I thought it was PERFECT for Project Women. Watch the video and find out why.
“Scamming ISIS is the best thing anyone did on Earth this week”
My friend Lauren shared this a couple of months back, I shared it with Tara and then Kristin Tona just shared it again with Tara and it has us all weeping. Watch as a super cute couple undergo age transformation right before their eyes. It’s so sweet and heartfelt.
